James Cozine Westerfield married an unknown person on 11 May 1843 at Mercer Co, Kentucky. He and Catherine Sortore obtained a marriage license on 9 December 1801 bondsman listed is Peter Banta. James Cozine Westerfield died on 20 March 1867 at Harrodsburg, Mercer Co, Kentucky. He was buried at Old Mud Meeting Cemetery, Harrodsburg, Mercer Co, Kentucky.
     Learned the wheelwright's trade but afterwards studied surveying. He and a brother David might have received college educations. He was listed as the County Surveyor in the 1850 and 1860 Mercer Co census reports.

He came to Kentucky with his parents when he was six years old. While still a small boy the Indians came to their settlement and the settlers were compelled to flee to the fort in which Daniel Boone was also in refuge. They stayed there six months. James grew up near Harrodsburg and remembered the old fort being within 200 yards of the present courthouse there. He is said to have "owned more than 70 slaves at the time of they were freed and was financially ruined" as a result.
