Military service between 1861-1863 enlisting in the Confederate Army as a member of the Clarke Calvary participating in many battles during the early years of the war. He fell on 9 June 1863 at the battle of Brandy Station, shot through the head. His comrades seeing no signs of life left him for dead. He was later found alive by Federal troops. He spent the remainder of the war in the hospital. He was able to recover enough to go back and work his farm. His condition did fade ultimately to paralysis and death.

H, 130th Regiment, New York Infantry, this is the date on the company muster-in roll of his enlistment, he joined his Company on 3 September 1862. The 130th Regiment later became the 19th New York Calvary. He was injured during the battle of Cedar Creek in Virginia. When his company was involved in a charge the horse he was on stumbled and he fell off. Milititary service ending 30 Jun 1865 Virginia; with Co. H, 1st Regiment, New York Dragoons.

He was eventually transfered to a army hospital at Elmira, New York were he died from an amputation.

Military service beginning c.1861 at Allegany Co, New York; with Co. E, 5th Regiment, New York Calvary, he re-enlisted on 26 December 1863. He was on detached duty as the 1st sargent of the company ambulance corps service. On 21 May 1864 Virginia; Sergeant Samuel W. Sortore when leading an advance guard crossing a bridge over the Mattapony River, Virginia was shot by a rebel concealed in a thicket; dying in a few minutes. He was buried by his comrades near by.

Military service between 1861-1865 enlisting in the 19th Kentucky Infantry Regiment (Union). This was done despite the fact that his father was a owner of many slaves. David was wounded in battle, lost one eye, and had several ribs broken, lost a part of one ear, and received a big gash on his head. He was in the siege and capture of Vicksburg, Mississippi.

Milititary service between 1861-1865 running off to join his father in Tennessee when he was 14 years old. The unit took him into service as a drummer boy since he wanted to stay with his father and they were short of men. James took part in the Battle of Perryville, Kentucky, which was fought only four miles from his home.
